Dear Beloved Friends & Family,

After 39 weeks of excitement and anticipation, CJ has finally come to join us! It sounds cliche, but we could not have made it through with such joy and comfort without you guys. Your prayers, parenting tips, gifts, donations, love and support made every day one to look forward to.

CJ was born with no major complications, healthy and perfect! Susan is doing well and recovering from 24 hours of labor. God's fingerprints were on every minute of those 24 hours and the time to follow. I've posted the details of our journey on NS Live »

We can't wait for all of you to meet him!

The Big THREE-OH

It was an action packed Sunday yesterday - starting with Easter service at NewSong, and ending with a dinner party put together by my wonderful wife celebrating the 3rd decade of existance (my 30th birthday).

I'll let the pictures do the talking:

NewSong Easter Service

Dance Solo  Dave G speaking

Johnny, the sand artist  My point of view

meat, Meat, MEAT!!  O ya, there was ice creme there also

Wonderful Baseball/SF Giants cup cakes
Susan made - who needs a cake?
Me and the Mrs. (Jr. not shown... yet)

THE GIFTS!!!

A joint gift from a bunch of people.
This is a professional cutting board.
Professional??? you ask - don't judge
until you've tried cutting on this hunk
of wood!
The best show on TV right now. It reminds
me of the many years I worked in an office.
This show reminds me of the more pleasent
moments - chillingly similar at times!

An awesome gift from, believe it or not, a
Dodger fan!!! Very thoughtful, and very
awesome! It extends the rivalry off the field
and into nerd-dom, I mean, intelligence.

Always a good gift - enough said. You can't
tell from the pic, but that can is way huge,
25.4 ounces huge (that's double the norm!)

A giftcard, always an awesome gift, which
without fail goes to a guitar pedal or some
other piece of musical gear (modelled by
mr. knitted bear - knitted by susan)
.
 An awesome HAND-KNITTED SF Giants
beanie made by Susan. I love it and so
will CJ!! (modelled by Totoro)

Next stop, the birth or our son!!!

Play Ball!!!

Spring is here which means IT'S TIME FOR BASEBALL!!!

This season I am celebrating my 20th year as a Giants fan - WOOHOO!  The last 12 years of my fanhood has been hard though because I live in the land of the Dodgers (the historic rivals of the Giants).  I think I've only connected with about 5 Giants fans here in the Southland.

So to fill that void (and to show my fanaticism) I've created a San Francisco Giants Fan website:

www.krukandkuip.com

With the site, I hope to bring fans together from all over the US (and the world!) to this hub, where fans can upload photos/video, post blogs, write articles, etc.  The vision that this becomes site for the fans, of the fans.  If you are wondering who Kruk and Kuip are, they have been the tv and radio voice of the Giants (and fomer players for the Giants) for as long as I can remember.  This site is a tribute to them and the fans.

Away we go....................

The Office

After working in the corporate world for over a decade, I can't help but see the parallels of my new [non-corporate] work environment.  I'll use this picture to illustrate:

A: My Boss (Headphones)
Although mainly used to hear the rest of the band so I can play along with them, it is also used to communicate with the producer and/or engineer of the song - a lot of bossy instructions and a lot of encouragement (most of the time) are spoken into those headphones.

B: Co-workers (Guitars)
That is the team that helps a song get their colors and sounds.  Each guitar has a unique sound and adds its own flavor to a track.

C: Computer Keyboard (Guitar-in-use)

The notes played across the fretboard are like letter-keys on a keyboard.  The combination of chords and melodies are what create the letters/words/sentences/paragraphs of the music.

D: Computer Monitor  (Music Stand)
I probably look at the sheet music on the stand most of the time while recording, just like I would stared at a computer monitor in the office while working.  The sheet music is my task-list and outline of what I need to do.

E: Sales Team (Effects Pedal Board)
All the different pedals, and the different combinations of the pedals, add a different personality to the guitar sound which enhances it.  They are like a sales-team, making the product I deliver sound more appealing [than it really is - no offense to any sales people out there, ha ha].

F: Printer (Amps)
Once I figure out what to play, how to play it, and what to play it with (all in a split-second!), my product is outputted from my amplifiers and printed out for my boss to hear so I can get his feedback.

Life as a working musician has been fun, challenging, and rewarding.  People always ask me at what point will I know that have "made it" in the music world.  My answer is, "I'm there!" in the sense that, as long as I can do this everyday and make a living out of it, whether it is recording, bar gigs, wedding bands, bar mitzvah gigs, whatever - that's the dream for me.  The ultimate challenge for me is to find ways to do this everyday for the rest of my life!

The Surreal Gig

Last week I was asked to play acoustic guitar for a funeral service at the burial location.  I have never played at a funeral before, and went in with a very open attitude because it's not a typical musician gig.

The experience was surreal.  A lot of times when I play in a public setting I get stuck in the rut of trying to create the moment for the audience who is listening.  Once the first chord was strummed and the vocalist started the verse, it hit me.  I did not have to do anything to enhance the moment, but just to be a part of the moment.  No one was there to see me or the singer - in fact no one knew who we were.  But letting go and simply being part of the experience and not worrying about what lines to play, or how to play them - that revealed another part of music that I have never experience before.

After the service was over, one of the family members of the deceased came to me and said "those songs made the memorial special".  It sounds cliche or just the nice thing to say, but I saw the deep thankfulness in his eyes.

Driving off, I thought to myself - this is why I became a musician, not for myself, but for others to experience life moments.
